What I came to the user test with. Very basic layout still, but with some font choices and images.

Mega User Test #2

Sarah

- full screen menu is good

- suggestions to keep the homepage simple because they actually like it with nothing on it

- yellow dot works as a menu

Haiyan

(all suggestions for when I get round to designing the mobile experience)

- filter button is maybe too small

- could put a fade up on image

Hemi

- unexpected to be taken straight to 'your favourites' after logging in

- could change the name of the button to 'log in to see your favourites'

Barry

- article title for his experience is a little confusing (change wording of user goal)

- FACT image confused with the header

- would like to see other peoples comments

- images get lost

- add meta data underneath article thumbnails

General

- could animate yellow dot menu button to become a large circle until it fills the screen

- article titles in gopher not text font

- more tracking on paragraphs

- CR looks like the start of an interview

- image captions too light

- paragraph spacing could be tighter

I have come up with more of a system now that I can apply to all my pages. I'm pretty happy with how this is, but I'm thinking the enter button on the best awards page might be a little too subtle? Also the information laid out on this page feels a bit clumsy.

Made overlays, so when the mouse hovers over the titles they fill in black. Thinking about doing the same for the name of the website itself.

Website Inspiration

Kerry Ann Lee showed us a brand new website called Katoitoi which is run by Design Assembly, and she has written an article for it. I absolutely love the layout and I have to say that this one website is probably my main source of inspiration for lots of my design choices, such as the rules, layout and the neutral background colour.
